From Pink to Punk! The First Look at Jasmine Tookes’s Victoria’s Secret x Balmain Angel Wings
by JANELLE OKWODU
When you think of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, you’re likely to imagine the diamond-studded Fantasy Bra or layers of pink lace—but who says an Angel can’t be a punk, too? The mega-brand is always evolving, and for this year’s Shanghai extravaganza, it enlisted Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing to reimagine the traditional Angel accessory. Inspired by the spirit of 1970s rock, Rousteing dreamed up a look fit for a runway rebel. Though previous wings have been adorned with everything from feathers to lollipops, Rousteing’s safety pin–covered remix makes for a particularly arresting statement—especially on the back of the glamorous Jasmine Tookes.
With a full look featuring shredded leather, spikes, and studs, Tookes is guaranteed to vamp it up the moment she steps onto the pink catwalk. But during her fitting, she was all laughs, sharing her preshow game plan with Vogue while revealing a couple of trade secrets. Did you know that the VS Angels assemble their own wings? Okay, they don’t, but Tookes gave it a go by adding a few extra safety pins. Above, catch a preview of her walk and see Tookes flash a smile and share her good luck secret (hint—it’s her mom), keeping things sweet even while wearing what may be the most in-your-face VS costume yet.
Olivier Rousteing never rests. Fresh off a Balmain collaboration with L’Oréal and a Spring 2018 show, the brand is partnering with Victoria’s Secret on looks for the 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and a capsule collection launching in stores and on the Victoria’s Secret website on November 29. As with all things #BalmainArmy this one comes with a hashtag, #VSxBalmain, and some black-and-white art.
As for what to expect from Balmain’s VS line, you can bet on some sexily gilded items, lots of body-conscious silhouettes, and the label’s luxury expertise being translated into both the runway and real-world items. While other designers have made several looks for the Victoria’s Secret Show in the past, this collaboration marks the first time VS has ever partnered with a high-fashion brand to create an exclusive collection. So tune in to the Victoria’s Secret Show on November 28 on CBS, and get ready to shop the next day.
